Bamboo 201 ~ Bamboo for Scientists
This area is reserved for only
the highest level papers of bamboo science. Scholars are encouraged
to submit documents pertaining to biological aspects of bamboo such
as anatomy, biochemistry, ecology, genetics, molecular biology, morphology,
pathology, and so on. These papers may include theory, novel investigative
techniques, and other actual results of research. The papers will
be reviewed by ABS-SoCal as well as by those who visit this portion
of the ABS-SoCal Web site. All papers should be submitted to CarlRowland1@cox.net.
The file type should be .doc or .pdf.

Grant Proposal
Scientists are encouraged to review the following proposal. The intent
of the proposal is to encourage serious thinking about the biggest
question in bamboo biology: what is the molecular mechanism responsible
for inducing flowering in bamboo after many years of asexual growth?
A multi-pronged approach has been set forth to solve this mystery.
Comments on how to improve the experimental design are welcome.

Bamboo Seeds from 1932?
I, Roy Wiersma, obtained these vials of bamboo seeds from the Walling
Lab at the University of California, Riverside, in 1996 or early 1997.
It appears that they are from 1932. I have not been able to identify
the non-English script on the vials. If you recognize this writing and
can transliterate or translate it please contact Webmaster Carl
Rowland. The writing probably indicates the species of bamboo in
the local language where it was collected. The parts that I can read
are as follows: "23/3/32 KLAJ [or KLAI]", "D. brandisii
13/2/32", "Bambusa burmanica 13/2/32", and "14/3/32
Bambusa arundinacea."

Seed Vial Update
Someone finally has been able to decipher the foreign language written on the bamboo seed vials! ABS-SoCal thanks Andrew Zel who contacted us November 29, 2008 with the interpretation:
I viewed your web site and I can read these labeling. They are Thai language.
"23/3/32 KLAJ [or KLAI]"=Thai word pronouces "klai" "D. brandisii 13/2/32", "Bambusa burmanica 13/2/32"=sweet, and "14/3/32 Bambusa arundinacea."bamboo forest, picked 14/13/32-Arundinacea (name of bamboo specie)
The date may not be in 1932 (AD, Western Calendar), it might be in Thai calendar of year 2532. Current Thai year is 2551 (=2008 in Western calendar).
Generally, if one to write date in Western Calendar one would write 2/13/32 (month first, then date, then year), but your vials indicate 13/2/32, it probably means 13th day of 2nd Month, year 2532 (Thai year). Thus, these vials may be 19 years old. However, if it is written in western calendar it may be as old as 76 years.
If I were to write for Thai readers, it would be in Thai calendar, but if I were doing the preservation in US, I would use Western calendar. Thus, I am 50%/50% guess of what calendar it may be because I don't know where the vials are found. It is for sure, 19 -76 years. Sorry, could be much helpful.
Those are possibilities.
Andrew
